Many years ago, there was a large German emigration to the area near my home town. The traditional architecture style there had tiny little windows above the doors that had no name. Many of the newcomers asked “Was ist das” as they came to the doors, and a new word was born: now the French name of these little windows is “vasistas” (pronouced similar to the German).
